In
the Trenches--A Daily Arsenal for Those on the Front
Lines
(A
devotional for secretaries)
Peacefully
Qualified
“Giving thanks to the father Who has qualified us to
share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”
Colossians 1:12
In the Trenches:
Before breakfast was over, Sandy pushed her family out
the door so she could be the first one at church to
greet the visiting speaker. As secretary she felt she
needed to represent the church. Her husband and
children were still wiping sleep from their eyes and
mumbling something about doughnuts when Sandy spotted
the speaker getting out of his car.
Posting herself on the front steps, Sandy ran over her
checklist: sharp hairdo, great dress, and new shoes.
New tight, high-heeled shoes, she muttered. But it
will all be worth it to make a good impression. She
quickly moved toward the visiting pastor.
“Helloooo!” A gentle greeting became a scream as
Sandy fell face forward into the arms of the visiting
preacher. So much for a good impression.
Take Note:
Later that day after Sandy had regained her composure
and apologized to the visiting speaker, she sat in the
sanctuary with tears running down her face. “Lord,
why can’t I just be myself? I never feel like I’m
qualified to do anything.”
She flipped over to Colossians where she read Paul’s
encouraging words to this young church.
“Let’s see. I don’t qualify myself; God has
already done it. He makes me His daughter even though
I bring nothing to the table but myself.” Sandy
fingered the lines lovingly. “If my Father thinks
that is enough, maybe I should too,” she whispered.
Sandy didn’t need to qualify herself in God’s
sight or to try and impress others. God has another
way.
Helmet On:
Read Colossians 1:9-14.
1. If we have knowledge of God’s will (v.9) through
the wisdom His Spirit gives, then what will follow (v.
10-11)? ___________________________________
He has qualified us. What else is ours? (v.12-14)

Prayer:
Father, help me to see with my spirit all the
things you have done for me and be at peace.
